darsh's life

nostalgia, songs, and past relationships

Isn't it lovely and powerful to have songs be able to not only take you back in time, but replay feelings?

Recently, Faye Webster released a new song1. Her musical voice and tone is so impressively constant and embedded that even a brand new song started to get me nostalgic.

This led me to listen to her song I listened to a lot in my last relationship: In A Good Way. It reminded me of the new feelings I was introduced to when you start falling for someone and time spent with them is all you want to do. It made me miss having someone like that in my life.

However, with the new psychological tools I now have, I knew it was important to move on from this feeling as it detracts from the present and probably just leads to self pity, and something else I learnt later: sentimental longing.

It's ok to feel through these memories and nostalgia and acknowledge them. However, focusing on it to compare to the present moment is not desirable. Time is forward moving and nothing you think about the past will change the present or future. It's wasted effort. Instead, come back to the present as quickly as possible so you don't miss out on it.
