on depressive cycles
I came across a post1 that noted down the signs of when they were feeling depressed. I recently went through a similar phase and I think it will be useful to note down my particular signs and what I can do to get past them.
I am probably depressed if the following occur:
- desire to avoid interaction with others under normal social situations
- hyper aware of my surroundings and presence
- resorting to excessive escapism eg tv and sometimes alcohol
- brain fog that mainly involves not being able to think about things for too long or falling into cyclical thoughts
What should I do to get out this when I notice it next time?
- I've realised doing something creative and solo is really helpful. For example, hikes, writing, going to a new place and reading a book, or even just night time strolls in a new area.
- Continue with regular fitness commitments and consider giving up some more outgoing commitments.
- Spend time with friends, or better reach out to have a casual chat with someone over the phone or in person.
- Take a day or two off instead of pushing through work commitments if possible. I am already not very productive, so it's better to use that time to recover instead.
