darsh's life

on depressive cycles

I came across a post1 that noted down the signs of when they were feeling depressed. I recently went through a similar phase and I think it will be useful to note down my particular signs and what I can do to get past them.

I am probably depressed if the following occur:

  1. desire to avoid interaction with others under normal social situations
  2. hyper aware of my surroundings and presence
  3. resorting to excessive escapism eg tv and sometimes alcohol
  4. brain fog that mainly involves not being able to think about things for too long or falling into cyclical thoughts

What should I do to get out this when I notice it next time?

  1. I've realised doing something creative and solo is really helpful. For example, hikes, writing, going to a new place and reading a book, or even just night time strolls in a new area.
  2. Continue with regular fitness commitments and consider giving up some more outgoing commitments.
  3. Spend time with friends, or better reach out to have a casual chat with someone over the phone or in person.
  4. Take a day or two off instead of pushing through work commitments if possible. I am already not very productive, so it's better to use that time to recover instead.
